As of early this week, Facebook time lines has been populated with different scandalous pictures and links, distracting and inappropriate pictures and links coming from different users. The problem is the users that appears to post it are not aware of these posts too.

This unusual activity is actually a form of spamming and has been creating a lot of talks in and out of the said social networking site.

Spam is the use of electronic messaging systems (including most broadcast media, digital delivery systems) to send unsolicited bulk messages indiscriminately. (taken from Wikipedia)

Given these facts, Facebook security group has been trying to resolve this issue and explained that the security of their users are their top priorities. But given these facts, what could be the news behind this?

Operation Facebook: November 5

It has been speculated that a group called "Anonymous" will take down the said social networking site. But a few weeks later the group took back their threat and told that it was just a joke. Even though, few people have waited for the said date and it seems nothing actually happened.

A Few More Weeks Later

November 15, the giant social networking site has been spammed with lots of inappropriate photos, some of which are from celebrities like Miley Cyrus and Justin Bieber. Many users have been reported to take their accounts down due to this malicious spamming.

Up to now, Facebook hasn't publicize the reason behind this issue. Due to this, speculation over the web has connected the November 5 threat to this actions. Last week, a group who claims to be allied with Anonymous posted a video that it had created a virus called "Fawkes" virus, a WORM that would attack Facebook.

The video claims the worm can be controlled remotely and that once it's fully understood it "will use this to its advantage against corruption."

From what I can see, it seems that Anonymous made a mistake on their announcement. They said that the fifth of November is the date to kill Facebook, unfortunately, it seems to be that this is the start of 'killing' Facebook.

How about you, what can you say?

well, Facebook hasn't announced the actual cause of this spamming and I don't think they will. This information is still a speculation thought but according to my analysis, this could be real.

  10. Too bad! I didn't witness the spamming event because of my Internet connection. Hope to see it someday (I'm bad :P). There are rumors that Facebook already captured the said "Hackers" and the problem is the browser and not there system. Hmmmm.....

  11. I actually saw the miley cyrus one (and I clicked it.. LOL). Anyway, I don't think that FB will announce the truth anyway, it's as good as saying, "hey, FB can has security hole!" :p

  12. I never saw the pornographic contents itself (sayang!.. LOL)

But I saw Jomi & Roy Paran posted the same message on my wall but it's in Filipino. It's about liking a particular page then running a script. It's good that I didn't click on it coz it looks suspicious.

  13. Hi Sir Marvs! :)

Yeah, some said that once you clicked and/or liked it, the spam will also infect your account. I'm not sure with that one though since I the said virus won't be visible on your own timeline.

  16. Anonymous said before that they will attack fb because of the accusations that fb sells the information of its users. But i can't believe that the group Anonymous would use porn for that.

  17. This is similar to what happened to Friendster. Spammers (and eventually jologs, but that's another story, hehe) took over and people started leaving. But then FB was already in place then so people had somewhere to go. In FB's case now, people might migrate to Google + but it doesn't seem to be prepared for such diaspora yet.
