Today, I have heard of a news regarding a serious threat from an unknown group. They are actually trying to threat one of the most successful social networking site which is Facebook (FB).
According to the said threat, they aim to 'kill' FB on November 5th. They claim that FB are becoming seriously invasive and that the company sells information that could be used for other purposes to the government agencies. Due to this, they have threatened to shut down the said social networking site.
A few weeks ago, a blog posted a letter from a guy claiming that he is closing down all his social networking accounts for the sake of privacy. His point is that these kind of sites are starting to get most of his private information and so it is needed to be stopped. Now, does FB really does that with our accounts?
A transcription of the announcement* and the original video are below.

Attention citizens of the world,
We wish to get your attention, hoping you heed the warnings as follows:
Your medium of communication you all so dearly adore will be destroyed. If you are a willing hacktivist or a guy who just wants to protect the freedom of information then join the cause and kill facebook for the sake of your own privacy.
Facebook has been selling information to government agencies and giving clandestine access to information security firms so that they can spy on people from all around the world. Some of these so-called whitehat infosec firms are working for authoritarian governments, such as those of Egypt and Syria.
Everything you do on Facebook stays on Facebook regardless of your "privacy" settings, and deleting your account is impossible, even if you "delete" your account, all your personal info stays on Facebook and can be recovered at any time. Changing the privacy settings to make your Facebook account more "private" is also a delusion. Facebook knows more about you than your family. http://www.physorg.com/news170614271.htmlhttp://itgrunts.com/2010/10/07/facebook-steals-numbers-and-data-from-your-iph....
You cannot hide from the reality in which you, the people of the internet, live in. Facebook is the opposite of the Antisec cause. You are not safe from them nor from any government. One day you will look back on this and realise what we have done here is right, you will thank the rulers of the internet, we are not harming you but saving you.
The riots are underway. It is not a battle over the future of privacy and publicity. It is a battle for choice and informed consent. It's unfolding because people are being raped, tickled, molested, and confused into doing things where they don't understand the consequences. Facebook keeps saying that it gives users choices, but that is completely false. It gives users the illusion of and hides the details away from them "for their own good" while they then make millions off of you. When a service is "free," it really means they're making money off of you and your information.
Think for a while and prepare for a day that will go down in history. November 5 2011, #opfacebook . Engaged.
This is our world now. We exist without nationality, without religious bias. We have the right to not be surveilled, not be stalked, and not be used for profit. We have the right to not live as slaves.
We are anonymous
We are legion
We do not forgive
We do not forget
Expect us
Now what are these people thinking? Yes, they may have a point in there, but my stand is people who uses these sites are the one being responsible with their accounts and so FB should not be accused for this.
To be honest, as a programmer, I'm really looking forward to this event. I wonder how on Earth are they going to shut down such a big company like FB... and consider that they have the nerves to threatened them like this. Could there be an inside job (I mean a bug, not a person, that is already on the system) that is just waiting to explode? I can't wait.. :p

gusto mo try natin? lol.. para masimulan na natin ang world domination saka maaway mo na rin yung mga kaaway mo sa FB.. lol
ReplyDeleteyeah, mukhang nang-aasar lang ang mga ito.. it is not the first time na may nangyaring ganitong threat not only to facebook but to other networks.
ReplyDeletebut, true or not.. wala namang mawawala kung hihintayin natin yun di ba.. :)
I agree with you.. but still this is exciting for programmers alike. :)
ReplyDeleteI don't think anything will happen, to be honest. Well, no, I understand that it will be impossible for them to achieve such a triumph over the social networking giant.
ReplyDeleteIt was last March when a humor a came out that FB will shutdown but until now the service is still running.May point naman yung message kaya lang minsan di ko maiwasang maisip na may naiinggit din sa FB.
ReplyDeleteIf have read the "No to Facebook" post of Gian at isa na yun sa mga haters ng FB.lol...
mukhang kaabang-abang yan! LOL! ":))) sana makita ko ngang mamatay yung FB, kaso kailan pa kaya di ba? :))
ReplyDeleteI hope so. :) Facebook has been a great help driving visitors to my blog. It'll be a great loss to lose it.
ReplyDeleteHi Gian! well if this is true, then maybe Tumblr has found a way to counter it and keep it a secret publicly. Maybe FB can do the same especially with a long time of preparation. :)
ReplyDeletei see.. well let's just wait if this is really a hoax only.. thanks for dropping by Raj
ReplyDeleteI remembered a time when an Anonymous group also attempted to shut down Tumblr.
ReplyDeleteAll Tumblr peeps were looking forward to that day, there were some attempts.
But the day has passed and they never succeeded 'shutting down' the site.
If this is true, I wonder if they have the power to shut down something like Facebook.
A site worth billions wouldn't be easily infiltrated.
anonymous later announced on twitter that this is some fake news created by some media enthusiasts..
ReplyDeleteYou're right, it's like a TV series that I can't wait to happen.. hahahah
ReplyDeleteAbout your question, yeah you're right.. there can be more than what they were threatening.. hmm.. I wonder what their real goal is?
Since Nov 5 is really far from now, I really wonder what strategy will they be doing. I mean that is long enough for Zuckerberg to prepare for an all out attack. Not unless, they send an inside, unnoticeable virus now that will explode on the said date (similar to April Fools' Virus).. hahaha this is really exciting! :p
Come to think of it, if you are a house thief would you notify the person, residing in the house you are suppose to steal from, of your heist schedule?
ReplyDeleteIt's already a challenge to hack Facebook as it is. And with the public announcement, I'm pretty sure that Zuckerberg is on the works to fortify his securities even further. Or he may have a secondary hot-swap server that immediately replaces the first server when it's bugged down.
Wow. This is just like those story plots in the movies and TV series.
Definitely worth the wait. :)
thanks Ramcel for the comment, I honestly can't wait for Nov 5th.. hahaha.
ReplyDeleteI mean, as a programmer, this is like one of the greatest attempt that hackers can do.. that is if this is real.. :p
Great find Aj. Very intriguing. My bet is that this is one of those hoax information like the March 15, 2011 Facebook "shutting down" rumor.
ReplyDeleteBut let's see. When the time comes, we can get back here and tell some stories about it. :)
I for myself can't wait for this event too.. hahahah
ReplyDeletewell this is quiet interesting, we'll see what happens
ReplyDeletethanks for the comment krn.. yeah I agree, I think the hacker group's aim is not how FB handles the account but the thrill of shutting down a big system.. it's like a gold medal for every hacker to do that...
ReplyDeletevery interesting post. they somehow are true but... yes, the users are much responsible on their account. Not the Facebook itself.
ReplyDeleteIt could be. But most people on Tumblr (I can say based on my observation) are brilliant enough to know if there's something going on because they are regulars on the site.
ReplyDeleteNovember 10, facebook is still here... Missed something ?
ReplyDeletewow! welcome here :) hahahah
ReplyDeletewell, it seems that this is one of the few hoax that scattered over the net a few months ago.. obviously it didn't happened.
